4 Great DIY Tips That Could Increase Your Home Value

Every homeowner loves a great Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project! Some simple updates can actually increase your home’s value quite a bit in the eyes of a buyer. From cosmetic updates to technological upgrades, here’s a list of 4 weekend projects that could help raise the value of your home and improve your quality of life!

1. Paint!

Starting with the easiest one that a lot of people overlook or hire out: Painting! To begin with, take a tour of your home and notice any areas that may be worn, chipped, marked, or otherwise damaged. This is especially important with trim. An easy weekend project would be to repair and re-paint all or some of the trim in your house, around doorways, and along walls. To go the extra mile, you could grab some sand paper and wall putty to repair any holes or dings!

An update to wall colors could also help turn an otherwise dull room into a eye catcher with just a splash of color. See below for a couple color pallets that many modern interior designers are choosing.

Items needed:

-Paint

-Brush

-Painters Tape

-Sandpaper (optional)

-Wall Putty (optional)

2. Add Some Smart Tech to Your Home.

“Smart Homes” are becoming more and more common, and these days something as simple as a smart doorbell can instantly leave a good impression on a buyer looking at a home. Smart thermostats can save money on heating efficiency, and smart Smoke detectors can alert you of an emergency even when you’re not home. Here are a few internet-of-things products that you can buy and install yourself.

Smart Doorbells – Smart doorbells top the list because they are so useful! They are equipped with a camera so you can see who is knocking at your door, even when you’re not home. They also double as security devices.

3. Build A Raised Garden Bed, or Just Work on Some Landscaping

Everyone knows that the yard and garden are key elements to the comfort and look of a home. A beautiful front yard can set the mood for a guest walking into your home, or a buyer looking for a new home. Though this is real labor, it has a big payoff! A great place to start is just to rid your garden of weeds, and maybe even use some treatment to prevent them from coming back. If you’re not into landscaping and gardening, Pinterest and other sites have tons of inspiration. A good first step would be to create a trim of rocks or small plants around your main garden area.

For a real improvement on your yard, try building a raised garden bed, where you can grow vegetables and other plants. This can be done using simple lumber, hammer, and nails from Home Depot, but you can also build one out of unconventional materials like cinder blocks.

4. Clean Any Tile and Grout

A great idea to make any bathroom look 5 years younger is to do a deep clean of the tile, porcelain, and grout! You can get cleaning/refinishing kits that only need a bit of elbow grease to make a huge difference. This also applies to tile in other high traffic areas like a mud room or living room.
